A new update on me

So today I saw my orthopedic surgeon for my 7 week check-up and boy did I get some great news! My leg is about 88% healed and the doc was extremely happy with my progress and the range of motion I have. Yeah me!! He said that I still need to be leash walked for the next 3-4 weeks and can gradually increase the duration of my outings. And boy was I happy to hear that! I just love cruising around my foster parents' neighborhood, scenting for squirrels and deer.

By early-January, I anticipate being at full speed. I've been increasing my play time w/ my foster brother and really enjoying wrestling with him, playing ball and chomping on stuffed guys. The other day, my foster parents put up something called a Christmas tree. I'm really interested in the shiney "balls" on the tree and want to grab them off. They tell me "no" and to "drop it", and Santa-Paws will be bringing me new toys if I'm a good boy. Don't know who this Santa-Paws character is but, I hope it's worth it....

Update from Me

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven’t updated everyone on my progress, but I’ve been having some fun. On November 4th, I went for my first post-surgery follow up visit. My orthopedic surgeon was very happy with my progress and removed my splint and cast. He told my foster Mom that I still needed to be careful, but can start bearing weight on my leg. It took me a day or so, but boy is it great to be walking on all “fours” again!!

I’m up, active and curiously exploring my foster home. My foster Mom & Dad are frequently telling me that I’m still “in training” and have to take it easy. But I just can’t help myself!! I’m able to play a bit with my two GSP foster-brothers, love chomping on toys and have been going on short walks with my foster Mom where I really, really want to chase the squirrels, birds and deer I’ve seen. My foster Mom & Dad keep reminding me that I’m not quite ready for “hot pursuit”, but I’m counting down the days!

Still not a fan of the crate… My foster parents keep trying new tricks like hiding treats, stuffing a Kong and giving me a few Nylabones, but I’m not buying it! I’m much happier snoozin’ on the couch with my foster brothers. So, we’ll see how it goes.

I wanted to thank all the very generous people out there who have made donations to my care!!! I’m doing really well and won’t let your support go to waste! But I have to ask, are any of you interested in adding a very cute, curious love bug to your family?!?!?!?!?

I'm a Lucky Boy

Hi All,

My name is King. I am only 1 year old and was already picked up as a stray on the streets of Newark about 2 weeks ago with an injured leg. It turns out I have 2 fractured bones! Everyone was guessing that I was hit by a car, but I really can't remember what happened, I just know it hurts.

When they took me to the Humane Society and their vet examined me, it was determined that they didn't have a surgeon that could fix me...I heard them talking about "putting me to sleep" and I don't know what that means, but everyone looked sad about it. Once of the nice ladies there contacted the GSP Rescue volunteers and asked them if they could save me...now this was what I wanted to hear!!!

They agreed to see what they can do and sent a nice girl down to meet me and take my pictures. I had this big cone on my head and an ugly old splint on my leg, so they didn't come out so great, but I tried to look my best. I really am very handsome!

They took my xrays to a bunch of different vets, but it was determined I had to go and see an orthopedic surgeon due to the type of injury I had. Unfortunately, they said that they may need to amputate my leg, but I knew the girls would try everything they could to not let that happen. So the nice girl came back and picked me up, and boy was I happy to see her! First thing she did was take that silly cone off my head and put me in her truck. I was so happy to be out of there, I was rubbing my head all over her and her truck seats and snorting for joy!

She took me to meet another nice girl and we all went for a group trip to a specialist. He really loved me and thought I was the nicest boy! He looked at my leg, checked all my nerves and blood flow to make sure I didn't have any internal damage and took some more xrays. He said I needed surgery, but the good news was that they were able to save my leg! That was 2 close calls for me, I'm done with that nonsense!

The surgery was done on Friday, October 23rd and they said I will be able to live a normal, active, healthy life! I do need to be crated and kept quiet for 4-6 weeks, but I will make a total recovery from my injury. I have to have a follow-up visit in 2 weeks and have my splint removed and then 1 follow-up visit in 6 weeks and then a clean bill of health for me!

I'm in a foster home now, but it's only temporary....I'll be going to a permanent foster home soon enough. I appear to be house broken and I'm very good in the house. I just want to sit and be pet. I get along well with other dogs, too. The only thing I dont' really like is the crate...I bark when you put me in there, but I'll get used to it.

I am really looking forward to a home of my own, and now that my surgery was a success, I'm ready to go. I can "recover" in my own new home if someone wanted me.

I will send an update soon on my recovery and let everyone know how things are going for me!
